New Technologies focus for successful University Technical College bid in Daventry

Proposals for a ‘University Technical College (UTC) for New Technologies’ in Daventry have taken a step closer today [Monday 10 October 2011] after the project was approved by the Department for Education. In a letter received from Lord Hill of Oareford, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools, he said ‘This marks a significant step on the journey to opening (of the UTC in Daventry), and demonstrates the confidence we have in your vision’.

University Technical Colleges (UTCs) are a relatively new concept in education, and are designed to offer 14-19 year-olds an opportunity to take full time, technically-oriented courses. The Daventry UTC for new Technologies is planned to open by 2013 and will cater for up to 600 pupils. It will become part of a national network of University Technical Colleges (UTC) as proposed by Lord Baker and the late Ron Dearing of the Baker-Dearing Educational Trust.

[This is the second successful co-sponsoring of a UTC for The University of Northampton, following the earlier announcement of government approval for a bid at Silverstone (see below).]

Moulton College is the lead sponsor for the Daventry flagship government-funded project, a Beacon College known for providing outstanding education, and is co-sponsored by the University of Northampton. Other key partners include Daventry District Council and Northamptonshire County Council, West Northants Development Corporation and the Daventry Learning Partnership which includes Moulton and Northampton Colleges and the William Parker and Danetre secondary schools.

Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (National) - New online patent inspection service launched

UK business could save nearly £100,000 per year thanks to a free patent system launched by the Intellectual Property Office (IPO). The new online service, called Ipsum, will remove the cost to businesses of requesting patent documents; instead they will now be available for free at the click of a button.

The service is open to anyone, benefiting businesses researching patents, patent attorneys working for clients protecting their IP rights and potential inventors looking for the best way to find information on patent applications. This can help them understand why a patent was granted or rejected or know more about particular patents.

Previously each document requested by a business would cost £5 and by the time it had been delivered it might already be out of date. Ipsum is updated in real time so businesses will now have the up to date information on patent applications they need.

Critical Pharmaceuticals press release

Critical Pharmaceuticals today announces that clinical data from it’s ongoing Phase 1 program on CP024, a nasal formulation of human growth hormone (hGH), has shown that CP024 is able to induce IGF-1 to the same levels as a subcutaneous injection of the marketed product. IGF-1 is the main mediator of hGH activity in the body and a clinically relevant indicator of bioactivity.

Human growth hormone is a leading biological drug for the treatment of growth disorders in adults and children with global sales in excess of $3bn in 2010. Current therapies all require daily injections that are strongly disliked by patients and their carers. CP024 has the potential to transform the delivery of hGH by enabling non-invasive delivery.

The ongoing Phase 1 program on CP024 was to evaluate the bioavailability, bioactivity and safety of two CP024 formulations administered intranasally to healthy volunteers relative to a subcutaneous injection of a marketed hGH product.

Professor Illum, the CEO of Critical Pharmaceuticals, stated “We are very encouraged with the interim results from our Phase 1 program that show for the first time that nasal administration of hGH is able to induce IGF-1 to the same levels as a subcutaneous injection. Importantly, CP024 has also been shown to be well tolerated in repeat nasal toxicological studies and in our first human clinical trial. We look forward to starting a Phase 1b study shortly and continuing the development of CP024 to bring intranasal hGH to patients as an attractive alternative to daily injection”.

CP024 has been developed using Critical Pharmaceuticals proprietary CriticalSorb™ technology, a best in class absorption promoter, and is supported by funding from the Wellcome Trust.

Phase Vison hit the ‘TARGETT’ in the Aerospace sector

Air racing is rapidly growing in popularity and of course with electric aircraft there is none of the risk associated with using flammable fossil fuels. The focus when designing the aircraft is very much on speed rather then endurance with a maximum flight time of up to 20 minutes.

The aircraft being designed by Targett Aviation – named the Rebel Electric Racer - has a wingspan of around 20 feet and the company initially created a lifesize ‘proof of concept’ model to secure investment.  With this complete, the next phase was to gain an accurate representation of the entire aircraft for virtual testing and finite element analysis (FEA) on CAD with the aim of optimising the aerodynamic design of the final aircraft.

Phase Vision has been a pioneer in the development of full field white light 3D micro-metrology since 2002.  A team of Phase Vision scanning experts visited Targett Aviation and using products from the company’s acclaimed Quartz white light scanning range, scanned the entire aircraft within a few hours – a total of some 250 scans which have since been ‘patched’ and surfaced ready for the FEA stage.

The research will further assess the performance of EarlyCDT-Lung, a test designed to identify the existence of cancer antigens in patients displaying the earliest symptoms of lung cancer.

Developed by researchers from Oncimmune, the EarlyCDT-Lung test is the first of its kind. This test is designed to aid in the risk assessment and early detection of lung cancer. Currently, in most cases, a diagnosis is made only after the disease has progressed and the patient begins displaying symptoms of lung cancer. The EarlyCDT-Lung test is a blood test which analyzes a multi–antigen panel to detect autoantibodies that have been associated with lung cancer antigens. Autoantibodies are produced in the very early stages of lung cancer, potentially enabling doctors to detect the disease before it has time to progress.

CellAura signs license with University of Nottingham to access Confocal Perfusion System for Measuring GPCR Binding Kinetics

The University of Nottingham has developed a novel perfusion system mounted onto a confocal fluorescence microscope that allows the binding of fluorescent ligands to GPCRs expressed on live cells to be observed in real-time. Quantification of ligand binding and dissociation from individual cells under continuous perfusion flow allows the kinetics of ligand-receptor interactions to be determined. This is probably the first technology to be able to determine ligand binding kinetics on a single live cell.

CellAura has signed a license with the University of Nottingham to be able to access the novel perfusion system, which uses CellAura’s fluorescent ligands as its principal reagent. It is CellAura’s intention to commercialise the perfusion technology to provide an instrument platform on which its reagents can be readily used to measure ligand affinity, binding duration, and allosteric effects of drug candidates to alter fluorescent ligand binding and dissociation rates.

Champagne corks fly as Lachesis-funded Nottingham company gains FDA approval for unique fetal monitoring device

Carl Barratt, Managing Director of Monica Healthcare Ltd is celebrating after winning US approval to market their unique fetal heart monitoring device in the USA.

The Monica AN24 is a wireless fetal-maternal monitor, the first of its type in the world.  It measures the heart rate of the unborn baby, and helps identify potential problems before and during the birth process. Existing monitors measure mechanical signals, i.e. the mechanical movement of the fetal heart whereas the Monica AN24 device measures the tiny electrical signals from the fetal heart, and separates them from the much stronger signals from the mother’s heart.  The system is a very small wearable wireless device, rather than a large bedside monitor.  The key advantage is the wireless aspect; the patient no longer has to stay on the bed whilst being monitored.  Through the clinical trials, it has proved to be more accurate, working very well on obese mothers, an area where existing technology has had problems.  The Monica AN24 also requires less intervention, so that the midwives do not have to move the transducers in the same way they do for current technologies.  This makes the monitoring process easier for them and for the Mums.

Monica Healthcare gains FDA clearance for groundbreaking wireless fetal monitor

Monica Healthcare (based in the UK), has announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have granted regulatory clearance of their Monica AN24 wireless fetal monitor for use during Labour and Delivery. This FDA clearance enables Monica technology to be utilised for intrapartum term monitoring for all singleton births in the USA.

The Monica AN24 uses innovative wireless, non-invasive technology to collect real-time electrical signals from the abdomen of a pregnant mother.  The device uses complex algorithms to correctly identify signals related to the fetal heart rate and uterine muscle (contraction signals) on the abdomen of singleton pregnant women using ECG-style electrodes.  This method of using electrophysiological signals differs from current external monitoring devices that collect FHR and uterine activity data based on physical changes (e.g. change in reflected sound waves and changes on strain gauge) that may cause problems in data interpretation such as discerning FHR vs. MHR data.

Phase Vision Supports Racecar Engineers of the Future

Whether it’s Formula 1, IndyCar, or amateur stock car racing, there is simply no substitute for time out on the track to allow final refinements to be made to ensure optimum performance on race day.

When the Brunel Racing team from Brunel University in Uxbridge was seeking to improve its results in the annual Formula Student championships, they knew that the key task of getting the new version of the Yamaha R6 engine correctly fitted into the rear chassis space frame was one of the most time-consuming – and therefore one which offered the greatest potential for time savings if undertaken optimally.

CellAura releases beta-test version of High Content image analysis software

CellAura acknowledges that the bottleneck in High Content Analysis is not the generation of high resolution images of fluorescently labelled cells and tissues, but is often the off-line analysis of the image collection to determine the effect(s) of a particular treatment.

To address this bottleneck, CellAura have developed analysis macros for the NIH Image J image analysis software package that are suitable for quantifying the binding of CellAura’s fluorescent ligands. These analysis macros are available as beta-test versions incorporated into the Image J software for free download and testing. The analysis modules are also available as standalone free downloads for incorporation into existing Image J installations. These downloads are available from the CellAura website by going to the Image Analysis section.

Experts a safe bet to help gain cash

HAZID Technologies, based on Beeston Business Park, takes safety seriously because that is its business.

It was born out of the belief of company chairman Jim Madden that safety in process industries should be an integral part of the design and operation of oil, gas and chemical plants.

He came across software developed by Loughborough University which he realised could be developed into a system which would flag up the hazard areas, and agreed to commercialise and develop the technology.

But that development has required money, and while initial cash from the university, people in the business and of course Lachesis helped it get off the ground, it needed more support to take it on to the next stage.

This is how Jim and Hazid came into contact with Connect Midlands, the organisation which helps firms understand what they need to do to attract financial backing.

CompanDX Launches 31-Gene Time-to-an-Event Breast Cancer Test

September 15, 2010

By Turna Ray

CompanDX this week launched its "time to an event" breast cancer gene panel, which the company said can predict whether patients' cancer will metastasize based on a 31-gene signature.

The company, which recently changed its name from Compandia to CompanDX, presented data on the test at the British Breast Cancer meeting this week in Nottingham, UK. The test uses CompanDX's Risk Distiller bioinformatics tool to predict the time in which a breast cancer patient's disease may metastasize after initial surgery and biopsy.

The company said it used three publicly available clinical datasets to generate the 31-gene signature, which it then validated in a fourth clinical dataset. "Across these patient cohorts the actual versus signature-predicted time to metastases has a correlation of 0.86," the company reported, adding that this was a statistically significant finding.

VenueSim pioneers new software tool to get passengers holidays from East Midlands Airport off to a flying start

In a first for UK airports, VenueSim and East Midlands Airport are using innovative technology to predict future trends and improve the start to passenger’s holidays.

East Midlands Airport prides itself on ensuring that its passengers have a stress free journey through its terminal and VenueSim are helping the airport to go one step further to help ease the journey through security.

Leicester based company, VenueSim have developed a new product that predicts passenger demand and flows at airports.  The product, called Q-Alert, uses an innovative piece of software to predict passenger demand at the security area of airports and, as a result, optimise the security requirements to meet this demand.  It is based on artificial intelligence technology from De Montfort University in Leicester and was developed in conjunction with East Midlands Airport.  Using both historical and modelled data, based on the passengers passing through the airport, VenueSim’s Q-Alert is able to accurately forecast when passengers will arrive at the security gates.  This information recommends the number of security lanes that need to be open to deal with this demand – and keep queue lengths to a minimum – which then allows the security team to provide cover in line with the forecast demand.  The system is even able to work in ‘real time’ to let the security team know when abnormal peaks in demand may be about to occur due to, say, a hold up on the road network delaying passenger arrival times at the airport.

Nottingham companies take the honours at the Lord Stafford Awards

A nanoparticle specialist and a company pioneering global ‘sat nav’ technology put Nottingham on the innovation map last night when the Lord Stafford Awards came to a glittering finale.

Over 250 people packed into the Epic Centre in Lincolnshire to see Promethean Particles (supported by University of Nottingham) and Nottingham Scientific Ltd (backed by De Montfort University) capture the ‘Innovation Achieved’ and ‘Innovation in Development’ titles respectively.

The two local businesses drew praise from the high profile judging panel for taking complex technology and transforming it into commercial enterprises that are going to create wealth and jobs in the East Midlands.

They also highlighted the impact both products could have on the global marketplace and the recognition this will provide for the two Universities involved.

Lord Stafford, who first launched the initiative in Staffordshire in 1997, was delighted with the quality of this year’s competition.

“The Awards are the only ones in the UK dedicated to celebrating innovative collaborations between businesses and Universities and Nottingham has certainly secured the plaudits this year.

“Nottingham Scientific and Promethean have shown what can be achieved when they combine their own skills and expertise with those of academia to secure commercial gains for both parties.”

He continued: “The winners will receive a £5000 cheque and a trophy from Ceramic Decals, not to mention promotional videos that will help them when marketing their products and services going forward.”

The third and final winner on the evening was social enterprise Hill Holt Wood from Lincolnshire, who walked off with the ‘Innovation in Sustainability’ Award.
